Toyota Reports Strong October SalesTORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 4 -- Toyota Motor Sales, USA (TMS), Inc., today announced October sales of 95,651, an increase of 2.9 percent over the same period last year. On a year-to-date basis, total sales of 1,045,913 represent an increase of 7.3 percent over the 978,430 sold in 1996. "Although our year-to-date sales are up more than seven percent," said Yale Gieszl, TMS executive vice president, "we believe consumer uncertainty generated by the stock market turmoil and our own stock situation -- a dealer supply of only 26 days -- restrained our October sales." Leading Toyota sales was the launch of the all-new Sienna minivan with 4,552 units sold, surpassing the best October sales month of its Previa predecessor. Toyota trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUV) continue to post strong sales. The 4Runner produced sales of 10,760 units, up 26.6 percent over last year and representing a best-ever October for the popular SUV. Year-to-date 4Runner sales are 111,104, up 37 percent over last year. Tacoma compact-truck sales of 13,056 were up 18.1 percent with year-to-date sales up 2.3 percent. RAV4 continued to post strong sales with 5,035 units sold. RAV4 year-to-date sales of 57,665 are 24.8 percent ahead of last year. The all-new Corolla posted sales of 15,622 units, a 5.3 percent increase over the same period last year. Year-to-date Corolla sales are up 7.6 percent with 189,108 units sold. Camry, with 28,054 sales during October, remains up 11.2 percent for the year at 337,122 units. The Lexus Division reported total sales of 9,150, an increase of 24 percent and its best-ever October.
