Kia to Test Electric Vehicle in America, KoreaIRVINE, Calif., Nov. 6 -- Next month, Kia will initiate a two-continent, one-year test of a Kia Sephia electric vehicle. The Sephia EV will use high-tech nickel metal hydride batteries and is expected to offer shorter charge times and longer range than most electric vehicles. Three Sephia EVs will be tested in Korea, while two will be tested in the United States. The tests will begin in November and are expected to conclude in October 1998, with a target of more than 20,000 test miles. The trials of the Sephia EV will be conducted with an as-yet-unnamed independent testing company. Kia Motor Corp. extensively revised the Sephia platform for use as an electric vehicle. Included in the modifications were new heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems; a new braking system and steering system as well as revised suspension componentry. The electric powertrain uses a brushless direct-current motor, and the charging system is mounted on board. Suggested retail prices and expected sales volume will be determined after the test is concluded. The Sephia EV is expected to make its public debut at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show in December. Kia Motors America currently markets the Sephia compact sedan and the Sportage compact sport-utility vehicle and is the U.S. sales, marketing and distribution arm of Kia Motors Corp. in Seoul, South Korea.
