100th Police Force Nationwide Now Zapping Crime With Electric Bikes

    SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 17 -- ZAP Power Systems
(OTC Bulletin Board: ZAPP) of Sebastopol, California announced today that San
Jose bicycle police have become the 100th police force in the nation to use
electric bikes on patrol.  The five electric bikes are available to San Jose
through a donation from CALPINE, a local independent power company.  San Jose
is the first major city in California to use electric bikes.
    The ZAP Patrol(TM) electric bikes appear to be normal police mountain
bikes, but with the flip of a switch -- ZAP -- small, powerful electric motors
transform them into the newest law enforcement vehicle, complete with lights
and siren.  Each is equipped with a patented electric motor system, weighing
just over 20 lbs. The combination of human and electric power allows an
officer to arrive at calls sooner, without expending as much physical energy.
At 20 miles per hour, they will arrive at the emergency before a normal
bicycle.  The motors provide faster acceleration and more power for climbing
hills. Working like a turbo boost, the power-assist multiplies the rider's
input, preserving their poised and ready condition for a crisis situation.
Electric bike use in law enforcement is growing.  With the addition of San
Jose PD there are now 100 agencies using electric bikes in the United States.
Since 1994, ZAP has delivered over 7,000 electric bikes for consumer use.
Civilians can purchase a kit to ZAP their own bicycle for $375.00, or purchase
a complete Electricruizer(TM) cycle for $649.
    ZAP intends to finance the increase in manufacturing and marketing of its
electric bicycles and its planned ZAP electric vehicle outlets through a
recently cleared public offering of stock.  The shares are being sold directly
