Deja Vu All Over Again: Accord Number One With American ConsumersTORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 27 --- The Honda Accord was the top car choice among American consumers in 1997 for the ninth straight year, according to an analysis of 1997 automotive registrations by the independent Polk Company. Individual Accord registrations totaled 359,101 for the year, compared to 326,925 for the Toyota Camry. Third was the Honda Civic at 301,093, followed by Saturn at 248,134 and Ford Escort at 223,214. Polk separates individual consumer purchases and leases from fleet purchases. The company considers a vehicle a fleet purchase when more than 10 vehicles are registered to the same address. "I guess this makes us Number One with real life every day people," said Dick Colliver, Honda Division executive vice president. "Now I know how the University of Nebraska felt. We deserve a share of the National Title." Rounding out the top 10 for the year were the Chevrolet Cavalier, Ford Taurus, Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Lumina and Chevrolet Malibu. 1997 Top 10 Polk Retail Registrations Model Individual Fleet Total '97 Registrations Registrations Registrations Honda Accord 359,101 18,562 377,663 Toyota Camry 326,925 53,819 380,744 Honda Civic 301,093 12,336 313,429 Saturn 248,134 4,869 253,003 Ford Escort 223,451 56,919 280,370 Chevrolet Cavalier 222,214 78,020 300,234 Ford Taurus 180,041 189,287 369,328 Toyota Corolla 174,257 44,294 218,551 Chevrolet Lumina 121,753 108,519 230,272 Chevrolet Malibu 113,542 42,122 155,664 SOURCE American Honda Motor Corporation
