Subaru Sells Its 3 Millionth Vehicle In The US

CHERRY HILL, N.J., March 16 -- Subaru of America, Inc (SOA)
announced today that it has sold its three millionth vehicle in the United
States.
"Reaching the 3-million-unit sales milestone is particularly special for
us since we are celebrating our 30th anniversary in the United States in
1998," said George Muller, the company's president and COO. "It also comes on
the heels of record-breaking sales for 1997 and the resurgence of the Subaru
brand in the US," he added.
Founded by two American entrepreneurs in 1968, the company was the only
publicly-traded import auto company. In 1990, after 22 years of public
ownership, the company was acquired by its manufacturing partner, Fuji Heavy
Industries Ltd., as a wholly owned subsidiary and is today the exclusive US
sales and marketing company for Subaru automobiles.
Long known for its heritage in traction technology, Subaru was among the
first auto manufacturers to offer front-wheel drive vehicles in the US in
1972. In 1975, the company introduced the market's first four-wheel drive
passenger car. Today, it sells only all-wheel drive vehicles and sells more
all-wheel drive cars than all of the other manufacturers combined.
Headquartered near Philadelphia, the company markets and distributes
Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a network of nearly 610
franchised dealers across the United States. The Outback and all Legacy
models sold in the United States are built at the company's American
manufacturing plant, Subaru-Isuzu Automotive, Inc., which employs over 3,000
full-time associates and is located near Lafayette, Ind.
