Subaru Announces Best March Sales Month in Seven Years

    CHERRY HILL, N.J., April 1 -- Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA)
today announced its March sales figures -- best total sales for the month of
March since 1991.  Subaru recorded a sales total of 10,989 units -- up over
21 percent versus March 1997.  Overall, year-to-date 1998 totals are up
14 percent over the same period in 1997, showing consistent sales growth.
    The Legacy model line led sales with 6,804 units posted.  The Outback
accounted for 4,206 units of the Legacy line-up -- an 8.7 percent increase
over the same period last year.  The newest Subaru hybrid, the Legacy Sport
Utility Sedan, accounted for one-third of all Legacy sedan sales which totaled
1,157 units.  Forester sales contributed 2,659 units for the month of March.
    Subaru of America, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy
Industries Ltd. of Japan.  Headquartered near Philadelphia, the company
markets and distributes Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a
network of nearly 610 franchised dealers across the United States.  All Legacy
models sold in the U.S., including the Outback and Sport Utility Sedan, are
produced at the company's American manufacturing plant, Subaru-Isuzu
Automotive, Inc., near Lafayette, Ind.  In 1998, Subaru celebrates 30 years in
the U.S. market, selling over three million vehicles.
