ITT Automotive Takes 'Drive Safer America!' to the Streets-- Safety Technology Simulator To Demonstrate Driver Safety Nationwide -- AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 7 -- ITT Automotive is literally taking its "Drive Safer America!" traffic safety campaign to the streets in a million dollar, state-of-the-art semi tractor-trailer outfitted with the very latest interactive technology to demonstrate the proper usage and the importance to motorists of four-wheel anti-lock brakes. ITT Automotive President Frank Macher today unveiled the 46,000 pound, 18 wheel trailer that includes the first-ever anti-lock brake technology simulator, interactive exhibits on anti-lock brake systems and a portable Skid Pad Challenge where drivers can experience first-hand the advantage of four wheel anti-lock brakes. He announced that the "Drive Safer America!" Road Show will visit shopping malls, fairs, dealer events, auto shows, racing events and other venues. The "Drive Safer America!" Road Show simulator includes six automobile seats mounted on a multi-axis hydraulic motion system and a state-of-the-art projection and surround sound system with an 82 inch screen. Drivers will experience the difference between four-wheel anti-lock brakes and conventional braking systems as they feel the effects of coping with hard braking situations. The semi-trailer also includes an interactive pedal-feel and noise simulator designed to make drivers aware of how anti-lock brake systems respond during hard braking situations. A skid pad from inside the trailer can be rolled out onto a parking lot or stadium for Skid Pad Challenges to demonstrate proper braking techniques with four-wheel anti-lock brakes. "We're so serious about safe driving that we're 'taking it to the streets' with the most technologically advanced driver safety exhibit ever built," said Macher. "Four-wheel anti-lock brakes can help save lives. But like any other technology they have to be used properly. The "Drive Safer America!" Road Show is going to reach hundreds of thousands of drivers who may not know how to use their anti-lock brakes, or who may be in the market to buy a new vehicle but who don't realize the positive difference four-wheel anti-lock brakes make in a hard braking situation." In February 1997, ITT Automotive partnered with Indy Car driver and automotive expert Lyn St. James to launch "Drive Safer America!" a national consumer awareness initiative designed to help drivers better understand the proper techniques for safe driving year round, including the effective use of four-wheel anti-lock brakes. This past November, ITT Automotive president Frank Macher took a bold stand on driver safety, insisting that U.S. automakers make "Safety a standard, not an option," a rally cry for the standardization of four-wheel anti-lock brakes in the North-American market. As part of its "Drive Safer America!" consumer awareness initiative, ITT Automotive has made a variety of safety information available free of charge.
