Rare 1967 L-88 Corvette With Only 12 Miles to Be Sold
28 May 1998
Rare 1967 L-88 Corvette With Only 12 Miles to Be Sold by Dana Mecum Auctions at Bloomington GoldBLOOMINGTON, May 28 -- It was shipped from the factory by train to Alan Green Chevrolet in Seattle, Wash. From there it was trailered to a secret warehouse where it was to be turned into a 1/4 mile dragster. However, after eight years it not only never became a dragster, it never left the warehouse. In 1975 it was sold to Lincoln Auto with only 11 miles on the odometer. They immediately sold it to a collector in Minnesota, who in turn sold it for an estimated $12,000. It remained in seclusion with a Wisconsin collector for another ten years before it was purchased by David Burroughs and Jim Krughoff. Krughoff is a long-time collector of premier Corvettes. Burroughs is a nationally recognized authority on L-88s and the creator of Bloomington Gold. Remarkably, the window sticker is still glued to the driver's window and is documented by photos from 1975 in Corvette News. Likewise, the original warranty book remains in the glove box. One memento of the original owner still remains in the cabin. Stuck to the inside rear view mirror, a black dymo tag reads, "Don't Relax!" The red paint and black interior are nearly perfect, having seen almost no daylight in over thirty years. There were only twenty L-88s built, making this virtually no mileage car extremely rare. It is estimated it will sell in the million-dollar range. Many other Corvettes ranging from entry level up to the ultimate collector car will be offered for sale at this year's Bloomington Gold to be held June 25-28 at the new Interstate Center in Bloomington, Ill. For additional information, contact Bloomington Gold at 1-888-42-GOLD-1. A few examples of other significant Corvettes to be offered this year are: * A 1956 prototype with a '55 body that was formerly owned and driven by Zora Arkus and Elfi Duntov. Documentation includes original registration papers. * A 1955 Corvette Serial #VE55S001002. Believed to be the first production V-8 Corvette. * A 1962 Corvette race car (George Robertson) raced at Sebring -- Southern Division Class A Champion. * A 1967 Corvette Copo built for Bill Mitchell's wife. GM notebook attached to gas tank states Mrs. Mitchell special built orders per Z Duntov. SOURCE Bloomington Gold
