National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Presents Excellence Awards to Volvo EngineersROCKLEIGH, N.J., June 4 -- Volvo safety engineers Ingrid Skogsmo and Lennart Johansson have been presented with prestigious awards by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA. Volvo's safety experts were honored by NHTSA during the 16th International Technical Conference on Enhanced Safety of Vehicles (ESV) in Windsor in Canada in June. Ingrid Skogsmo, who was presented with the Safety Engineering Excellence Award, has been working at Volvo Cars since 1985 and has spent most of her time at the Volvo Safety Centre as a specialist in biomechanics and as the person responsible for setting the standards for crash safety characteristics. She is currently the head of the Department of Safety Strategy and Accident Analysis. During her time at Volvo, Ms. Skogsmo has published a large number of scientific reports on crucial subjects such as frontal offset collisions. One of her most often cited contributions is a report on the important area of neck protection criteria for children. Ms. Skogsmo also represents Volvo on a number of international working committees. Lennart Johansson, who was presented with the Special Award for Appreciation, has been at Volvo Cars since 1979 and is currently head of the development of interior safety systems at the design department. During his time at Volvo, he has been involved in the development of features such as rear seats, front airbags and side airbags. Lennart Johansson has also written scientific reports, including one on Volvo's unique side impact (SIPS) bag. In addition, two safety reports were presented by Volvo Cars at the ESV conference. The WHIPS Seat - A Car Seat for Improved Protection Against Neck Injuries in Rear End Impacts describes Volvo's new seat concept for counteracting neck injuries in rear-end collisions. This system will be introduced in the new model Volvo S80 coming to dealerships this fall. It was written by Bjorn Lundell, Lotta Jakobsson and Bo Alfredsson from Volvo Cars, in collaboration with Martin Lindstrom and Lennart Simonsson from Autoliv. The Inflatable Curtain (IC) - A New Head Protection System in Side Impacts describes Volvo's new protection system for counteracting head injuries in side impacts. The system, which comprises an inflatable protective curtain, protects both front-seat and rear-seat passengers. The system will be introduced in the new model Volvo S80. The report was written by Anders Ohlund, Camilla Palmertz and Johnny Korner from Volvo Cars, in collaboration with Magnus Nygren and Katarina Bohman from Autoliv.
