Land Rover North America's Mongolia Expedition Television Documentary to Air on Travel Channel

    LANHAM, Md., June 29 -- Last year, seven journalists from the
U.S., Canada and England set out to drive across Mongolia in a pair of Land
Rover Discoverys.  Their unusual off-road adventure, set against a backdrop of
breathtaking steppes, lakes, mountains and desert, is the subject of Mongolia:
An Expedition of Discovery, a television documentary that will air July 12 on
The Travel Channel at 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. EDT.
    The overland journey through rugged, unpredictable terrain began near the
Siberian border in Lake Hovsgol National Park, home to possibly one of the
oldest lakes in the world.  Here, participants met with Mongolian scientists
studying the extraordinary biodiversity of the lake's watershed.  Heading
south across the lush, green expanse of the Selenge river valley, the group
continued on to Kharakorum, the 13th-century capital of Genghis Khan's
legendary empire.  And following the trail of Dr. Roy Chapman Andrews, the
Expedition concluded near the "Flaming Cliffs" of the Gobi Desert, where in
1922, Dr. Andrews and his team were the first to unearth a nest of dinosaur
eggs.
    Stopping periodically along the way, the Westerners befriended several
locals and learned first-hand about the Mongolian tradition of providing
hospitality to strangers.  They danced to 1970s disco music with a group of
curious teenagers, drank tea with one of Mongolia's last few "reindeer
families" and were invited to take shelter from a wind storm inside an
authentic Mongolian ger.
    Other Land Rover-based adventures, such as 1994's La Ruta Maya Expedition
through Belize and Guatemala, and the crossing of Kalimantan, Indonesia, in
the 1996 Camel Trophy, have appeared in documentaries on the Discovery Channel
and ESPN2.
