Donnelly Makes Mirrors for New Shelby Sports Car

21 July 1998

Donnelly Produces EC Mirrors for the Shelby Series 1 Sports Car
HOLLAND, Mich., July 20 -- When Carrol Shelby's new Shelby
Series 1 sports car hits the streets later this year, it will include one of
Donnelly Corporation's most innovative interior mirrors: an
electrochromic (EC) mirror with eight-point compass, map/courtesy lighting and
a high-intensity LED (light-emitting diode) that provides specific lighting
for the floor console.
Donnelly announced today it will produce about 500 of the EC mirrors
during the estimated 18-month production run of the vehicle. The mirrors will
be produced at Donnelly's 128th Avenue facility in Holland, Mich., and then
shipped to Shelby American's new world headquarters at the Las Vegas Motor
Speedway industrial park for final assembly.
"The original Shelby Cobra has carved out a place in the automotive
history books, and I am sure the Shelby Series 1 will be a big hit with car
enthusiasts worldwide," said Donn Viola, Donnelly chief operating officer for
North America. "For Donnelly, supplying the EC mirror for the new sports car
is more than a chance to be part of a legend. The car helps show the industry
the full range of Donnelly's mirror capabilities. We can produce EC mirrors
for compact cars like the Volkswagen Golf, utility vehicles like the Mercedes-
Benz ML320, and limited edition sports cars like the Shelby Series 1."
Donnelly's EC mirrors use the company's patented GLAREFREE(TM) technology.
During night-time driving, EC mirrors dim automatically when they detect glare
from the headlights of following vehicles. Several studies have shown the
reduction in glare achieved by EC mirrors reduces driver fatigue and improves
driver reaction time while driving at night.
