Rick Hendrick's Saturn Of Charlotte & Saturn Of South Blvd. Make `Kids' Kingdom' A Reality At Westerly HillsCHARLOTTE, N.C., July 29 -- What began with a big contribution from a little supporter will happily end in a new playground for Westerly Hills Elementary School on Denver Avenue. And Rick Hendrick's Saturn of Charlotte and Saturn of South Blvd. are making sure of that. Rick Hendrick's Saturn of Charlotte and Saturn of South Blvd. will contribute the materials and volunteers needed to build a new playground at Westerly Hills Elementary School on Aug. 5 & 6. The project represents the first area playground to be completed as part of the "Kids' Kingdoms" program, a national effort by Saturn retailers to deliver much-needed playground equipment to the youth of America. In December 1997, Berryhill Elementary School fourth-grader Julienne Nicole Paul won $1,000 as part of a national contest and decided to donate the money to her school for the purchase of playground equipment. The little girl's largesse left a lasting impression on Rick Hendrick, who served as President of all area Saturn locations at the time. Acting on the recommendations of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system, Saturn management decided to channel its resources and energies into the construction of a new playground at Westerly Hills. The project at Westerly Hills is expected to fully adhere to the proposed federal rules and regulations governing compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, which goes into effect in the year 2000. A heightened emphasis will be placed on both safety and accessibility at the Westerly Hills site. A 4 p.m. celebration and dedication ceremony will take place on Aug. 6 at Westerly Hills Elementary School (located at 4420 Denver Avenue in Charlotte). All interested parties are encouraged to call Saturn project coordinator Whitney Moats at 704-536-5530. Cunningham and Associates, a Charlotte-based company, is serving as the local supplier of the "Game Time" playground equipment and Sunbelt Rentals is furnishing heavy equipment and hand tools to aid in the completion of the project on Aug. 6. Choate Construction, Inc. will supply laborers and materials for the construction of a 175' x 5' wheelchair-accessible walkway while Southern Concrete Materials will donate concrete for the playground. Additionally, Sandwich Construction Company will provide free box lunches for all volunteers at the event.
