Information Update from Energy Conversion Devices, Inc.
    TROY, Mich., August 7 -- Ovonic Energy Products, Inc. has
moved into a plant in Kettering (Dayton), Ohio to produce advanced nickel
metal hydride (NiMH) batteries.  The NiMH batteries are currently available in
the Chevrolet S-10 electric pick-up truck and will soon be available in
General Motors' revolutionary EV1 electric vehicle.  The batteries will also
be available to other original equipment manufacturers for use in their
advanced technology vehicles.
    Ovonic Energy Products, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of GM Ovonic,
L.L.C., the manufacturing joint venture between General Motors and
Ovonic Battery Company, a subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ECD)
.  GM Ovonic is continuing to commercialize the NiMH battery in
conjunction with the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium.
    The plant currently performs battery work that was previously done in
Dayton by employees of the Dayton Phoenix Group.  These employees have
relocated to the Kettering facility and continue to be represented by the
International Union of Electronic, Electrical, Salaried, Machine and Furniture
Workers Union (IUE) Local 768.
