GM and IUE Make joint Statemet on Delphi
19 August 1998
Statement of Edward Fire, IUE President and Harold Nichols, General Motors Conference Board ChairmanWASHINGTON, Aug. 18 -- The following is a statement of Edward Fire, IUE President and Harold Nichols, General Motors Conference Board Chairman: "Today IUE and General Motors took the first step in ensuring that the union and the company work as full partners to make the spin-off of GM's Delphi Automotive Systems a success for both workers and Delphi. While we had a frank and constructive dialogue, we did not get all the details we need. This is just the beginning of a long road that will take us through negotiations in November 1999 and beyond. "We agree that the spin-off has the potential to open new opportunities that could benefit everyone involved, but to realize these opportunities we truly believe that IUE must be involved in effectuating the spin-off in a real and meaningful way. We join with the leaders of our local unions to let General Motors and Delphi know that we will be vigilant in protecting the rights, jobs, wages and benefits of our members as the spin-off moves forward. "IUE has a long history of working cooperatively with General Motors to make the company competitive, protect members' jobs and grow the union. We want to maintain the same relationship as Delphi becomes an independent company. We expect, and our members deserve, that General Motors and Delphi will work with us openly and honestly and as full and equal partners."
