In-Vehicle Computing Systems Manufacturers Struggle to Improve Customer Awareness and Lower Prices
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 8 -- The past five years have
seen substantial growth in the world in-vehicle computing systems market.
Various companies are entering the market and market players are improving and
expanding their product lines. Although today the majority of in-vehicle
computing systems are navigational, such systems as mayday, traffic
information and in-vehicle entertainment are expected to gain a more
significant share of the market in the future.
According to strategic new research conducted by Frost & Sullivan
(http://www.frost.com), World In-Vehicle Computing Systems Market, world revenues
reached almost $1.7 billion in 1997. However, until prices decrease the
market is not expected to grow significantly.
"The market for in-vehicle computing systems has growth potential,"
asserts Frost & Sullivan Analyst Inge Matthey. Unfortunately, many potential
consumers are not aware of these products, or their advantages. The challenge
manufacturers face is how to convince consumers to spend the money for a
system that provides routing information they can get for free. The threat of
these substitute products such as the Internet, conventional maps, or radio
stations, can hamper market growth.
Another threat to this market is technological evolution. Products in the
in-vehicle computing systems market have a short lifespan because the
technology is changing so quickly that systems become obsolete within one or
two years. Market participants need to offer cutting-edge products to remain
competitive, says Matthey.
This study is segmented into U.S., Western Europe, Japan and Rest-of-
World. The Japanese in-vehicle computing systems market is more developed
than the rest of the world. Products are rapidly entering the market, and a
variety of features are being incorporated. Major opportunities also exist in
Western Europe, Australia and Asia. Western Europe is the world's second
largest market, where such systems are perceived to be safety systems rather
than entertainment systems.
This new study by Frost & Sullivan, World In-Vehicle Computing Systems
Market, provides an overview of the world market to help market participants
decide whether to remain in the market or to leverage the technology for other
products. Also included in the study are revenue forecasts, market shares,
technology and market trends, competitive issues and strategies.
