The citations are a result of 400 checkpoints and random patrols across the state from Monday, Aug. 31, to Sunday, Sept. 6. The numbers were reported by the law enforcement agencies in each county and compiled by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Besides cracking down on seat belt violators, law enforcement officers charged 1,002 with driving while impaired. They also discovered 22,970 violations, including 242 drug charges, 13 stolen vehicles and three fugitives from justice.
