Detroit Diesel Announces Series 60(R) Engine Fuel Economy Test ResultsDETROIT, Nov. 20 -- Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) announced today the results of two independent fuel economy tests conducted in the United Kingdom and reported by "Commercial Motor" and "Truck" magazines. DDC's Series 60 engine was used in both tests. The Series 60 engine used was emission certified to the European steady state test. In the United States, heavy duty engines like the Series 60 engine are certified using an EPA test procedure that simulates mostly transient or "stop and go" driving patterns. As a result of a recent industry settlement with the EPA, a supplemental steady state test, like those used in Europe, is being used to verify U.S. emissions compliance. In a test conducted by England's Commercial Motor Magazine, an ERF EC 127 tractor, powered by a 430 hp Series 60 engine, was run on a Scottish test route developed by the magazine. The magazine had this to say, "Thanks to its ultra-torquey Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine, this is the first 38 tonner (83,600 lbs) to break the 8.5 mpg (Imperial gallons) barrier around our demanding Scottish test route. What can you say? The Detroit ERF steam- rollered our Scottish route flat, with superlative results on every section. Possibly its most impressive performance was over our 'severe gradients' section, heading south on the A68, when it achieved the rare distinction of never coming out of the top half of the gear box." In a second test, conducted by England's Truck magazine, the ERF EC 127 was operated over a different test route. Truck magazine had this to say, "... when a truck smashes our (fuel economy) record by nearly 0.2 mpg we are inclined to give it our seal of approval." Lud Koci, Vice Chairman of Detroit Diesel noted, "The Series 60 engine has been the number one heavy-duty truck engine in North America for seven years in a row. These fuel economy results certainly speak well of the Series 60 engine's ability to produce world-class fuel economy in a wide range of conditions. The Series 60 engine has been, and will remain, the acknowledged worldwide fuel economy leader."
