Thrifty Opens in San Francisco Int'l Airport's New Centralized Car Rental CenterSAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 6 -- Thrifty Car Rental this week has moved into San Francisco International Airport's new $131-million consolidated car rental center. The 1.2 million-square-feet facility, the largest such facility at any U.S. airport, will house the fleets and service counters of eight car rental firms, including Thrifty. A shared busing system will shuttle customers to and from the facility, with a light-rail system scheduled to take its place in two years. Since the early 1980s, Thrifty has served customers of San Francisco International Airport from an off-airport location at 309 E. Millbrae Ave, which will remain open in order to serve local car rental customers. Thrifty Car Rental in San Francisco is the largest locally-owned car rental company in Northern California. Thrifty has nineteen locations in the Bay area, including facilities at Oakland and San Jose airports. The new consolidated rental facility is part of a $2.4 billion upgrade of the airport that includes plans for a new international terminal by 2000. Thrifty Car Rental, a subsidiary of Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc. , is an international network of about 1,200 locations in 68 countries around the world. Thrifty serves both the airport market and the local car rental market, and is one of the country's largest airport parking operators with more than 14,000 spaces in 48 U.S. cities.
