DETROIT, Jan. 6 -- In a ceremony this morning, January 6, at
the 1999 North American International Auto Show, the all-new Discovery Series
II was named by Automobile Magazine as the markets "Best Compact Sport
Utility." The Series II, which went on sale in North America this past
December, is the first engineering redesign of Land Rover's best-selling
vehicle since it was brought to the United States in 1994.

Commenting on Discovery Series II, Jean Jennings, Deputy Editor of
Automobile Magazine, said, "The new Series II is not ashamed of its rugged
origins and easily dismisses the notion that SUVs must become car-based and
less trucklike to succeed in their main work environment, the streets of
America."
Charles R. Hughes, President, Land Rover North America, commented, "We're
honored to see Discovery Series II recognized by the enthusiast editors of
Automobile Magazine. The Series II offers customers what we think is the best
combination of on-road comfort and off-road, go-anywhere capability. That is
what Land Rover is all about."
This is the second major award in North America for Discovery Series II.
In November 1998, the Series II's patented Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE)
system won a Popular Science "Best of What's New" award. ACE, an optional
system on the Series II, uses smart anti-roll bars to counter lateral body
movement under cornering conditions, improving passenger comfort and making
the Series II feel more responsive and stable. ACE is the first system of its
type for a sport-utility vehicle.
