Nissan: On the Road Again

NEW YORK--May 20, 1999--Just a year ago, Nissan Motor Corp. (NSANY) looked like it was racing down the road to ruin.
Now, Business Week says Nissan seems to be negotiating a surprising U-turn in North America. In the year that ended Mar. 31, it managed to eke out a $40 million operating profit. Since January, sales are up 8.2%, to 192,681 vehicles, and in April alone, sales spurted 21.7% over 1998 levels.
Nissan has a chance to rebuild its U.S. market share if a fresh crop of new models can keep up momentum. They include two key updates to the line: a redesigned Maxima sedan and a new sport-utility vehicle, the Xterra.
