Memorial Day Travelers Will Find Higher Prices At Texas Pumps; Average Gas Prices Up Over Last Year, Continuing Recent Trend
HOUSTON--May 21, 1999--Motorists kicking-off the summer travel season will find gas prices an average of 5.5 cents higher across Texas than last year's Memorial Day holiday, according to AAA Texas. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is $1.0653. In May 1998, the average statewide price was $1.0106.Gas prices continue to trend upward in Texas and nationwide following the March 1999 announcement of oil production cutbacks by OPEC. The Texas average price of self-serve regular unleaded has increased 17.44 cents since the March announcement.
AAA reports the national average price for self-serve regular unleaded gasoline is $1.157 per gallon, up 5.9 cents from a year ago when the national average was $1.098.
