Savage Hyundai Gives Car to Deserving Student

27 May 1999

Hyundai Educational Advancement Award Recognizes Achievement

In contrast to the negative emphasis placed on high school violence, John Savage of Savage Hyundai in Upper Darby, PA., is recognizing the positive, promoting education and commending students seeking a brighter future.
Awards will be made today at Upper Darby High School at 7:30 p.m., to John Gould and Kelly McBride. The first-place winner, Gould, will receive a brand-new Hyundai Accent and the second-place winner, McBride, will receive a scholarship award of $1,000.
Both students are being recognized for their award-winning essays highlighting how a vehicle could jumpstart their future and further their education.
Created by Savage, the Hyundai Educational Advancement Award's primary goal is to recognize the importance of higher learning and to assist the winners in their pursuit of secondary education.
"As tuition costs continue to escalate, it is becoming such a financial strain that some students have put their post high school education on hold," commented Savage. "By inaugurating these awards, I'm able to alleviate a little bit of the financial burden for these deserving students."
Students qualified for the award by writing an essay demonstrating how a car would prove invaluable while pursuing a secondary education. In addition to writing the essay, students were required to be enrolled in a secondary education program and have a written recommendation from an Upper Darby teacher or faculty member. The response was overwhelming and through a thoughtful selection process two winners were chosen.
"Reading those essays made me realize that there are so many talented kids out there. With a little financial assistance, they can pursue their educational goals," Savage remarked. "I'm hoping other area business owners will consider similar programs. We all know that a good education is the cornerstone on which you build your future."
