TRW Sponsors Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience for Cleveland Students and Teachers

8 June 1999

Corlett Elementary School 5th Graders and Teachers to Spread Their Wings at Space Camp

CLEVELAND--TRW is sending 16 fifth grade students and four teachers from Cleveland's Corlett Elementary School for the first time to the U.S. Space Camp facility in Titusville, Fla., June 13-18.
Instead of roasting marshmallows and searching for scavenger hunt items, these summer campers will visit NASA's Kennedy Space Center and see firsthand the new Apollo Saturn Center and Launch Complex 39, where the space shuttles are processed, assembled and launched -- carrying important payloads like the new TRW-built Chandra X-Ray observatory scheduled to be put in orbit later this year. Back at the Titusville training center, Corlett students will practice techniques used by shuttle astronauts as they hang suspended on the "Zero-G" wall.
"During all my years as an educator, this is the most exciting program I've been involved with," said David Keilin, Corlett School principal. "This trip promises to be a rich learning experience, from which these students will gain first-hand insight into what can be accomplished in a career in science and technology."
While the 16 elementary school students are participating in Space Camp activities, four teachers from the school will be involved in a special educators' program. Space Academy for educators is designed to assist teachers in motivating young people toward greater achievement in science and math by providing them with exciting space science and astronaut-style training.
Underwritten by the TRW Foundation, full scholarships of approximately $1,500 each provide air fare, tuition, room and board. TRW has sponsored the Space Camp program since 1995, each year offering the program to students in about a dozen locations where there is significant TRW employment.
"TRW has awarded the scholarships to motivate young people toward greater achievements in math and science," said Laura Johnson, TRW contributions manager. "We believe the Space Camp experience stimulates students about science and technology and inspires them to achieve academic excellence."
TRW will also sponsor the middle school program for 60 students from its communities around the globe for an all-expenses-paid week at Space Camp's Level 1 Academy at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, July 11-16.
TRW provides advanced technology products and services for the automotive, aerospace, and information systems markets.
