Oldsmobile Announces Plans for First National Women's Amateur Golf Tournament
Proceeds from 'Women's Oldsmobile Scramble' to Go to 'Concept:Cure,' for
                       the Fight Against Breast Cancer

FLINT, Mich., June 24 -- Oldsmobile announced today the
formation of the Women's Oldsmobile Scramble, the first national amateur golf
tournament for women. The tournament is open to all female golfers, without
age restriction, provided they have a current USGA Handicap Index.
A percentage of each entry fee for the tournament will be donated to
Concept:Cure for the fight against breast cancer. Conceived in 1996 by
General Motors as a way of demonstrating the company's commitment to women and
the causes that are important to them, Concept:Cure has already raised more
than 2.6 million dollars for a number of different programs and organizations,
including the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC).
The 1999 Women's Oldsmobile Scramble will take place in five PGA of
America Sections across the United States in 1999 -- Colorado, Georgia,
Michigan, Southern California and Western New York -- and will involve
20-25 events per Section. The plan is to extend the program to all PGA of
America Sections in 2000.
"We are very excited about the opportunity to create a Women's Oldsmobile
Scramble and extend our grass roots sponsorship of golf," said Karen Francis,
general manager for Oldsmobile. "This is an ideal fit for us because women
represent the fastest growing category in golf and this program affords us the
opportunity to continue our support of Concept:Cure."
The top teams from each PGA Section will advance to the sectional
championships of the Women's Oldsmobile Scramble, with two teams (gross and
net winner) from each Section advancing to the national finals. The finals
will be held concurrent to the Oldsmobile Scramble National Finals at Walt
Disney World, October 6-10 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
"The PGA of America's partnership with Oldsmobile has brought the
enjoyment of golf at a highly competitive level to amateur players worldwide,"
said PGA of America Chief Executive Officer Jim L. Awtrey. "We are very
pleased that Oldsmobile has decided to step forward and extend its sponsorship
of The PGA of America through the Women's Oldsmobile Scramble."
"We are very happy about the level of success and popularity achieved by
the Oldsmobile Scramble over the past 15 years," said Dick Garn, founder and
president of the event. "We are confident that we can develop the Women's
Oldsmobile Scramble into an equally outstanding event that will provide women
with an opportunity to showcase their skills on a national platform."
The Women's Oldsmobile Scramble will be conducted independently of the
16-year-old Oldsmobile Scramble, the world's largest amateur golf tournament
which is now in its l6th season. The Oldsmobile Scramble involves more than
100,000 amateur golfers at more than 2,000 local tournaments annually. Local
winners advance to one of 150 Sectional Championships, with two teams (gross
and net winner) from each sectional advancing to the National Finals. A total
of
300 teams, each comprised of four amateurs and a PGA Professional, compete for
cash, prizes and the coveted Oldsmobile Scramble national title at Lake Buena
Vista, Fla.
