Porsche Announces More Powerful Boxster For 2000ATLANTA, Aug. 4 -- A larger and more powerful engine headlines the list of enhancements for the model year 2000 version of the Porsche Boxster sports car. For 2000, the flat-six cylinder, liquid-cooled Boxster power plant has been increased in size from 2.5 to 2.7 liters. This change has resulted in a boost in horsepower from 201 to 217. As a consequence, the 2000 Boxster accelerates quicker (0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds compared to 6.9 seconds) and has a higher track speed (155 mph or 250 km/h compared to 149 mph or 240 km/h) than its predecessor. In addition to retaining the current Boxster engine's four-valve-per- cylinder technology and variable valve timing (VarioCam) system, the 2000 Boxster motor features a new engine management system with an electronic accelerator (E-gas) and a two-stage tuned intake system which provides a marked improvement in the torque curve, particularly in the lower and upper engine speed ranges. The enlarged engine generates 192 ft. lbs. of maximum torque, 11 ft. lbs. more than the previous power plant. All of Porsche's passive safety features are standard equipment on the 2000 Boxster. They include a high-strength body, programmed crumple zones, high-strength materials wherever necessary, and integrated side-impact protection and roll-over protection systems. This safety concept is supplemented by a comprehensive passenger restraint system which, in addition to airbags for the driver and passenger, includes a side airbag system "POSIP" (Porsche Side Impact Protection) suitable for cabriolets. The appearance of the 2000 Boxster's passenger interior compartment is enhanced by the use of high-quality materials. The center console, fittings of the dashboard and of the door trim panels are treated in a soft touch grain finish. Leather is used to cover the steering wheel rim, shift lever, hand brake lever and inner door handles. The 2000 Porsche Boxster will make its public debut at the Frankfurt International Auto Show in September. It will go on sale at U.S. and Canadian authorized Porsche dealerships later in the fall.
