World's Cleanest Honda Receives Clean Air Award
    TORRANCE, Calif., Oct. 22 -- Honda's natural gas-powered
Civic GX, the cleanest vehicle ever made with an internal combustion engine
with "almost zero" emissions, has received a coveted "Clean Air Award," from
California's South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD).
Honda was the only automaker honored with a Clean Air Award. The awards
are presented to "individuals, organizations, communities and businesses who
have made a significant contribution to cleaner air." Honda has earned one of
the awards in three of the last four years.
The Civic GX is designed primarily for fleet customers purchasing
alternative fuel vehicles under the Energy Policy Act and Clean Air Act. Many
Southern California cities including Los Angeles and Long Beach, have
purchased hundreds of Civic GX models for their fleets.
"The City of Los Angeles commends Honda for its 1999 Clean Air Award. The
City's deployment of Civic GXs and other clean air vehicles is already
reducing tons of emissions, resulting in improved air quality for people
throughout the South Coast Air Basin," said Lillian Kawasaki, General Manager
of the City's Environmental Affairs Department.
Exhaust emissions are reduced by 98.5 percent compared to current vehicle
standards (California NMOG/Federal NHMC). With its sealed fuel system,
evaporative and refueling emissions are nearly eliminated. Currently
certified as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV), Honda will certify the 2000
Civic GX for the all-new "Super" ULEV certification standards, at just 1/10
ULEV levels. In addition, the Civic GX boasts a 25 percent reduction in
greenhouse gas emissions compared to an equivalent gasoline vehicle.
"This award makes us feel we're on the right path towards making
significant air quality improvements," said Steve Ellis, Honda's Civic GX
program manager.
Built alongside other Civic models at Honda of America Manufacturing in
East Liberty, Ohio, the GX is fully equipped with automatic transmission and a
host of convenience and safety features. The Civic GX runs exclusively on
compressed natural gas, produces more horsepower than the gasoline powered
Civic LX and has a "real world" driving range of about 200 miles.
