Cobra Electronics Combines All of Its Exclusive Technology Features Into New 9-Band Radar System

    CHICAGO--Dec. 9, 1999--

Detector Features Electronic Compass and Boasts
One-of-a-Kind Design; To Be Unveiled At CES Show In January

As part of its continued effort to provide motorists with the world's most highly-featured radar detection systems, Cobra Electronics Corporation, the world's leading manufacturer of radar products according to IMR Research, Inc., today announced its ESD 9850, the first and only radar system to combine all of Cobra's exclusive technology features into one state-of-the-art device. The new ESD 9850 includes an electronic compass for easy navigation, a state-of-the-art Liquid Crystal intense Display (LCiD(TM)) and offers 9-bands of detection capabilities, which includes Cobra's patented Safety Alert(R) warning system and exclusive Strobe Alert(TM) detection.
It is part of Cobra's revolutionary new 9-band radar detector line that will be showcased in Cobra's booth, No. 339, in the Las Vegas Convention Center at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, January 6-January 9, 2000.
"Cobra continues to innovate its existing products by adding exclusive features like the new electronic compass, which creates a new use for a popular product," said Tony Mirabelli, senior vice president of sales and marketing. "Knowing where you're at is as important as knowing how fast you're going. In addition, we've incorporated unsurpassed detection capabilities and state-of-the-art features like the new LCiD(TM) display, Safety Alert technology and Strobe Alert warning, making the ESD 9850 the most feature-rich radar detection system on the market today. "
Unlike competing radar detection systems, the ESD 9850 enables motorists to detect seven speed monitoring systems, including the two latest state-of-the-art laser systems, ProLaser and UltraLite. Detection of these systems enables motorists to be more aware of their speed and perhaps lower it, which can increase safety of other drivers, passengers and pedestrians on the road.
"Once again, Cobra is driving the market by offering radar detection systems that incorporate all of Cobra's exclusive technologies into one revolutionary device," said Mirabelli. "Radar detectors are safety devices, and Cobra is at the forefront of designing units that include first-to-market safety features that heighten the driving experience."
Cobra's new ESD 9850 also features Cobra's patented Safety Alert(R) system, a technology that gives motorists advanced warning of approaching emergency vehicles, trains, buses, road construction vehicles, public utility vehicles and other potential road hazards, enabling them to pay more attention to their approaching surroundings. Cobra's Safety Alert transmitters are now installed nationwide, with a presence in all 50 states.
In addition, the ESD 9850 is equipped with the exclusive Strobe Alert(TM) detection, an exclusive feature that alerts motorists of emergency vehicles at intersections. Tens of thousands of emergency vehicles in the United States are equipped with strobe transmitters that activate traffic lights at intersections, enabling the emergency vehicles to travel safely to their destinations and avoid potentially dangerous collisions. The ESD 9850 can warn motorists of the presence of these high-speed emergency vehicles before they pass through the intersection, providing drivers with the opportunity to move quickly and safely to the side of the road.
Cobra has reinvented the standard radar detector design by introducing a new sleek, curved look to all of its new lines that can easily fit anywhere in the vehicle and makes it convenient to store it in a glove compartment or in a briefcase for portability while traveling. The ESD 9850 also features a sleek silver-metallic color and an exclusive, amber-colored Liquid Crystal intense Display (LCiD(TM)) designed exclusively for Cobra by Three-Five Systems, Inc.(R) which enables motorists to more easily view the display in direct sunlight or at night.
The new ESD 9850 radar detection system features Cobra's new Voice Alert(TM) system, a technology that verbally warns motorists of all radar signals, including three laser speed monitoring systems, approaching emergency vehicles and other road hazards, eliminating the need for drivers to spend time reading the display screen. Drivers have the option of choosing from audio or visual alerts.
Unlike other radar detection models, the ESD 9850 is equipped with Cobra's LaserEye(TM) 360-degree detection, a completely redesigned "periscope" that detects incoming signals from all directions and enhances performance and sensitivity of detection. The ESD 9850 features 10 visual and audio alerts, a highway-to-city mode switch and five signal strength LED's, informing drivers of the distance of approaching vehicles.
The ESD 9850 will be available in June, 2000 at most retail stores nationwide for a suggested retail price of $249.95.
