Pep Boys Launches New Private Label Credit Card; Now Part of GE's CarCareOne Network

PHILADELPHIA--Feb. 28, 2000--Pep Boys, the nation's leading automotive aftermarket retail and service chain, has launched its private label credit card, under a partnership with GE Card Services.
"Integrating Pep Boys with the CarCareOne network expands our cardholder base by hundreds of thousands, and increases the number of places that accept our card from our current 662 locations to more than 5,000 nationwide CarCareOne network participants," said Bill Furtkevic, Director of Marketing Communications. "Our card is being launched to become part of GE Card Services network's expanded base of cardholders and to add enhanced features, such as 90 days same-as-cash on all purchases over $150 and emergency roadside assistance. Our effort is designed to make the card the `card of first choice' to all our retail customers."
The company will heavily promote application and use of the card at its stores through traditional marketing and sales promotion techniques, plus a five-week employee incentive program that rewards employees every time they process 10 approved applications. Pep Boys is also rolling out specific training for service advisors and store employees to aid private label credit card sales efforts at the point of customer contact. In addition, Pep Boys is making regular use of monthly statement stuffers, coupons and special messages to cardholders.
"For the first time ever as part of our launch, we're offering 10% off a customer's first charge when customers apply for and use the card, now through March 31," Furtkevic added. "By making the Pep Boys card the `card of first choice' for our customers, we'll be providing them with additional buying power to do routine maintenance or other service they might otherwise postpone. And they won't have to tie up their existing credit cards."
"Through the Pep Boys CarCareOne card, Pep Boys will continue to build on its already strong brand equity, while including value-added programs such as the lowering of our 90 days same-as-cash offer to all purchases over $150, credit insurance and emergency roadside assistance."
Consumer features of the Pep Boys CarCareOne card include:

-- 90-days same-as-cash on all purchases over $150 with a minimum monthly payment required.
-- 25 day interest free grace period on all purchases under $150.
-- Low monthly payments with no annual fee.
-- Emergency roadside assistance services that covers jump starts, towing (up to 25 miles), tire change (with an inflated spare), fluid replacement, and lock-out service.
-- Exclusive offers not available through other credit cards.
