Visteon Team Takes Top Spot at FIRST Robotics Regional Event
14 March 2000
YPSILANTI, Mich.- -Thousands of students bearing their school colors filled the stands at Eastern Michigan University's Bowen Field House last weekend to cheer their respective high schools at the 9th Annual Great Lakes FIRST Robotics Regional Competition. Of the 67 high school teams that participated from around the state, Visteon proudly sponsored five local teams, one of which -- Team #201, the Visteon Troy Sales Office/Rochester High School -- took the No. 1 spot at the competition. The nationwide FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) program is a robotics competition designed to stimulate young people's interest in math and science. Teams have a mere six weeks to design and manufacture a joystick-controlled robot to perform a series of tasks, while learning first-hand what a career in engineering would be like. This marks the third year that Visteon sponsored teams. Here's how the five Visteon teams fared: * Team #201 - the Visteon Troy Sales Office/Rochester High School Team partnered with one of the Delphi Automotive Systems-sponsored teams to take the top spot overall at the competition, capturing the "No. 1 Seed Award" for being undefeated in preliminary rounds. In addition, the team also won the Cooperation Award recognizing it for the highest total scoring match during the competition. * Team # 208 - the Milan Plant/Milan High School Team placed fourth in the semi-finals, but was eliminated in the final match. * Team #184 - the Visteon Headquarters/Fordson High School Team took 18th place overall and received the Honeywell Leadership in Control Award for the articulating control system within the robot's arm. * Team #240 - the Visteon Monroe Plant/Jefferson High School Team came in 37th place overall and also took home an award for "Best Offensive Match of the Tournament." * Team # 470 - the Visteon Ypsilanti Plant/Ypsilanti High School Team was the Rookie Visteon Team this year and placed 61st overall. However, for the team's effort, the Motorola Wildcats Team #111 presented Team #470 with "Rookie of the Year" Award, a mock award acknowledging the team's first year of competition. "This is the type of program that Visteon is proud to help support because the students that participate potentially could be Visteon employees of the future," said Roseann Stevens, vice president, Visteon Global OE Accounts, who attended the event on Saturday to support the Visteon teams. "It's great to see the students so enthusiastic about engineering, science and technology. Visteon has a desire to give back to its communities -- to support organizations like FIRST. This provides real-life work experience and shows the importance of teamwork and dedication." The kick-off to this year's competition was held Jan. 8 in Manchester, N.H., the birthplace of the non-profit FIRST organization. Visteon teams will compete against nearly 400 teams at the national FIRST Robotics championship, which will be held at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., April 6-8. With a global delivery system of more than 125 technological, manufacturing, sales and service facilities located in 22 countries, Visteon is leveraging the talents of its 77,000 employees to deliver innovative, consumer-driven systems solutions to its customers.
