Sixteen Roadway Drivers Recognized for 2,000,000 Miles of Safe Driving

AKRON, Ohio--March 21, 2000--Today, sixteen professional pickup and delivery city drivers from Roadway Express, Inc. were recognized for individually driving at least two million miles without a preventable accident, a total of over 32 million miles of safe driving. Ceremonies to recognize the drivers, who came from terminals located across the U.S., were held at Roadway's corporate offices in Akron.
James D. Staley, President and Chief Operating Officer for Roadway Express presented each driver with the key to a new Pickup and Delivery tractor that will be used exclusively by that driver for the rest of his career with Roadway. A plaque commemorating the event was presented to each driver by Eugene A. Conti, Jr., Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy and Julie Anna Cirillo, Acting Deputy Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The tractors awarded in today's ceremony will have the name and safety accomplishment of each driver emblazoned on the doors of his cab.
"It is our distinct pleasure to honor these professional drivers for this achievement," said Staley. "These tractors serve not only as a reminder of their safety accomplishment, but as an inspiration to their co-workers and every motorist who sees them as they travel America's roadways. Roadway's goal is to be the safest carrier in North America and we challenge others in our industry to join us in this objective. We are proud of our drivers and grateful for the many years of dedication and outstanding performance they have given the company."
John D. Bronneck, Vice President of Operations for Roadway commented, "These are the finest drivers in our industry and they represent their profession well. We are proud to offer these drivers, and 1,911 other active Roadway drivers who have traveled one million miles or more without a preventable accident, as proof that drivers, companies and our industry can operate safely. Safety is not only important to the motoring public, with whom we share the roads, but it is also important to shippers, our employees and our shareholders. Safety in our operations means Roadway is a better place to work, greater reliability for our customers and reduced cost and less expense for our shareholders."
Roadway currently has 50 active drivers who have achieved three million accident-free miles; 329 who have accumulated two million miles without a preventable accident; 1,531 who have traveled over one million miles without a preventable accident; and one driver who has driven four million miles accident free.
