Volo Auto Museum Opens New Section... Celebrity Cars and Historic Automobiles
Holy Hotrods, Batman! What a Car!!!

VOLO, Ill., March 21 When the Dynamic Duo arrived on the
scene, it was in the Drop Dead Dramatic Batmobile. Loaded with crime fighting
tricks and gimmicks, it would storm out of the Bat Cave eager to take on the
forces of evil and badness. A few Batmobiles were produced for publicity
tours, contingency backups, and even private ownership.
The owner of this Batmobile decided to recreate his boyhood dream and
cruise in comic book style. In all, he cruised 128 miles before discovering
some dreams are nightmares. At every stop light, he was mobbed by grown up
kids eager to share his fantasy. On the road, he was pursued relentlessly.
The police would pull him over just so they could take pictures. He realized
that his Batmobile would be a powerful publicity draw, but that the publics'
enthusiasm for the Caped Crusader's car made it difficult to enjoy on the
road.
Built on a 1968 Chrysler chassis with a later 440 Magnum power plant, this
Batmobile is tricked out with all the Batphernalia. Flashing red lights,
flashing, beeping Bat phone, Bat Ray, Bat Beam, Compass, Ejector Seat Button,
Detect-A-Scope, Twin Parachute Packs, Bat Smoke Screen Button, Rocket
Launchers, Micro-TV, Bat Scanner, Fire Extinguisher, Emergency Bat Turn Lever,
and Holy Gadgets ... even more! This car is loaded with BIF...ZAP...POW!
All that -- and it's gorgeous, too. Batmobiles have been star attractions
the world over, including Chicago's own Museum of Science and Industry. Among
its "ultimates," the Batmobile is surely the ultimate promotional tool.
Although it has not been revealed, the Batmobile must certainly have a
built-in Bat Magnet, because it sure pulls in a crowd. And today, it's on
display in the Volo Auto Museum.

Bob Younger, Ray Fahrner, George Barris -- "Boothill Express"
Built by the Cunningham Company in 1850 this hearse served the folks
of Lee's Summit with quiet dignity until 1887. That's when Bob Younger,
late of the Jesse James Gang -- and life itself for that matter, was carried
to his just reward followed by 100 carriages of "mourners" -- which only
proves you can always draw a crowd when you give the people what they want.
After its 15 minutes of fame, the old hearse slipped into obscurity and there
it remained for the next 80 years.
Enter Ray Fahrner. One of the kings of Kustom Kars, he used to kreate one
of the most outrageous, most famous Kustom Kars ever. Suddenly the "Boothill
Express" rides again. Later, the great George Barris added a personal touch
or two. A fabulous crowd pleaser everywhere it was shown, coast to coast, it
is the only Kustom Kar to ever be exhibited by the prestigious New York Museum
of Modern Art.
And now, it has come to its final resting place in the Volo Auto Museum.

Roy Orbison's Porsche ... Pretty Woman!
Built to his special requirements, this 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera "Turbo
Look" Cabrio is as beautiful as its owner was famous. Its gleaming black
finish with matching leather give it understated class. Remember, Roy
Orbison's recordings sold more copies than any other performer.
Understated class!

3 Stars! Jimmy Stewart, Bette Davis and a 1960 Buick.
Both Jimmy Stewart and Bette Davis had been stellar Hollywood stars for
some 50 years and yet, they had never worked together. The 1982 film
"Right of Way" proved to be an ideal vehicle for the aging duo. And our 1960
Buick the perfect vehicle for the movie. It is now showing at the Volo Auto
Museum, surrounded by historic documentation of its star status.

    Mike Ditka's '54 Chevy ... a youthful discretion.
This 1954 Chevrolet 2-door sedan seems out of character for the fiery Mike
Ditka. But he was very young back then, and more interested in football than
automobiles. Apparently it was transportation he could easily afford. If the
car seems a bit Contra-Ditkary, therein lies its charm. It is now part of the
exhibition game at the Volo Auto Museum.
