Save Time On Your Vehicle Inspection: Inspect Before You Go! Helpful Hints for Motor Vehicle Inspections

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - For decades, New Jersey motorists have been taking their cars to inspection. Now, as most New Jerseyans have heard, the inspection process has undergone some changes. Parsons Infrastructure and Technology Group, the organization overseeing inspections for the state, has recently completed a variety of enhancements to improve the process for motorists once they arrive at a station. From increasing personnel and expanding station operating hours to speeding up the software and maximizing equipment performance, Parsons' goal has been to make everyone's vehicle inspection experience a better one.

But, there are things motorists can do, before going to the inspection station that will help inspections move faster, cut down on time and prevent them from making a second trip:

    1. Start by checking the inspection sticker on your windshield. Remember: inspections are required every other year, so your vehicle may not be due.

    2. Take a walk around your vehicle making sure that headlights, directionals, and brake lights work and are not cracked. (If you have the extra brake light in your rear window, check that as well. It must work to pass inspection.)

    3. Inspect your windshield for cracks and chips.

    4. Test your horn and wipers, both should be functioning before you go for inspection.

    5. Check your tires for wear and tear.

It is also essential that you check your paperwork before you get to the station. You'll need a current driver license, and valid registration and insurance cards. Keep in mind, that your registration and insurance cards do not have to be new, just valid.

Another helpful hint: Avoid putting off your trip to inspection until the end of the month. Historically, the end of the month and mid-day are when most New Jerseyans get their vehicles inspected. So, if you can, go in the middle of the month, first thing in the morning or on Saturdays.

Inspection stations are open from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm weekdays (except legal holidays), and Saturdays from 6:30 am to 2:30 pm. Each facility is also open one evening a week until 7:30 pm.
