Sears Statement Regarding Firestone Tire Recall

10 August 2000

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - In light of this morning's recall announcement,
Sears is working with Firestone to establish a process for customers who
purchased the affected Firestone ATX or Wilderness AT tires at Sears and want to
replacement them. Once that process has been agreed on, we will communicate to
all of our Sears Auto Centers and NTB locations, and they will serve customers
according to the process established.

As always, Sears stands behind its guarantee of satisfaction, and we will
work to satisfy all of our customers.

In addition, Bill White, president of Sears Automotive, today commented,
"Firestone is a valued supplier to Sears. During our long association, the
company has provided quality products for our customers. We support the
voluntary recall decision and look forward to working with Firestone to
satisfy customers who own the tires involved. Although the government's
inquiry is not yet complete, this action by Firestone indicates that the
company's primary concern is customer safety and satisfaction."
