Olympics Get Zapped
SYDNEY, Australia, Sept. 21 The New South Wales Police
Services have taken delivery of 12 ZAP Patrolbikes for use during the
2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
The officers who patrol the Olympic Village are using the electric bikes
to travel through traffic and to respond to calls for service at the games.
Although there are many types of vehicles available for the troops at the
Olympic Village, according to consultant Ted Wilson, "The ZAP bikes were
unanimously voted the most appropriate and useful vehicle at the games. The
troops enthusiastically want to use the bikes over other vehicle options.
They are not only popular with the cops but they are attracting heaps of
attention from the public. Apparently the ZAP bikes are the best way to
travel among crowds, and can be recharged almost anywhere."
After seeing the bikes in action, the University of Sydney purchased a
Patrolbike for their own security applications.
ZAP Patrolbikes utilize a patented electric drive system that allow the
mountain bike to travel up to 20 miles an hour during the officer's 8-hour
shift. Over 250 law enforcement, security and medical services now have the
ZAP system in use.
