Southern California Gas Prices Inch Down From Record High
LOS ANGELES--Oct. 17, 2000--Southern California fuel prices have backed away slightly from record levels reached in September, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California Fuel Gauge Report. The price for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel is $1.80 down from $1.81 on Sept. 19. The state average dropped two cents to $1.84.
Northern Californians continue to pay more than $2 per gallon for regular fuel in many places. San Francisco drivers pay an average of $2.06 a gallon -- down a penny. The average in Las Vegas is $1.78, down two cents from September.
Nationally, average fuel prices for regular unleaded gasoline dropped three cents in the past month to $1.55 a gallon.
California still has the most expensive gasoline in 48 states. Only Hawaii has a higher state average at $1.94 per gallon.
The slight decrease can be attributed to lower seasonal demand for gasoline as well as a drop in wholesale gasoline futures prices to below 90 cents per gallon. Further price reductions have been dampened by traders' concerns over Middle Eastern tensions, which have a tendency to move crude oil prices higher. Crude prices closed at more than $33 per barrel this week for the first time in three weeks.
